STREET LEAGUE AND SWEATY BETTY JOIN FORCES TO GIVE YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS THE SUPPORT THEY NEED TO THRIVE IN SPORTS
Sweaty Betty is on a mission to empower women through fitness and beyond, and Street League is proud to be a recipient of a generous donation from the Sweaty Betty Foundation.
The Sweaty Betty Foundation’s mission is to empower women and girls from every background to get active, and stay active, for life. Globally, only 15% of teenage girls are doing enough physical activity. The changes to girls’ bodies, and their confidence, caused by puberty is the biggest reason. Together, we’re working to combat this.
Street League received a donation of 800 Stamina Sports Bras from the sportswear company to support our commitment to empowerment and body positivity – with a gift-in-kind value of £32,000. This donation is being distributed to teams across the UK and will help ensure that young women and girls are fully equipped to participate in our programmes, enabling them to fully partake and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of sports and exercise.
Kirsty Steven, Director of Operations at Street League, said: “As we work towards our goal of 50% female participation in our programmes by 2025, this is a significant and substantial partnership. We know that young women and girls face different barriers when it comes to sports and physical activity, and this needs to be something we talk about openly and tackle head-on. From everyone at Street League, we thank Sweaty Betty for their support and recognise the impact of this donation.”
The importance of a sports bra cannot be underestimated. “Evidence suggests that sports bras have performance benefits, comfort benefits and health benefits, so I would say they’re just as important for exercising females as trainers.” said Prof Joanna Wakefield-Scurr of the University of Portsmouth.
“Women and girls face additional obstacles in so many areas of life. To many, a sports bra might seem like no big deal. But the cost associated with that additional piece of equipment can be considerable, and that's the last thing young women and girls should be worrying about. The more we can do to remove this obstacle, the better, and I’m excited to see Sweaty Betty supporting organisations like Street League to break down barriers in sports.” – Street League employee
