National Careers Week: MATEA’S Journey

"Since joining the programme, my confidence has grown every day."

Life can sometimes feel like a cycle that’s hard to break, especially when responsibilities take priority over personal growth. For Matea, being a full-time carer for her mum meant putting her own ambitions on hold. But through Street League’s Female-Only Academy, she found the support she needed to take her next step.

Before Street League

Prior to joining Street League, Matea felt overwhelmed. Her days revolved around caring for her family, leaving little room to think about a career or even her own future. While she was proud of the role she played at home, she also felt isolated, unsure of how to balance her responsibilities with her own aspirations.

Taking the First Step

Joining the academy was a leap of faith for Matea. She was nervous but hopeful that this could be the start of something new. Surrounded by other women who shared similar struggles, she quickly realised she wasn’t alone. The supportive environment helped her build confidence, learn new skills, and start planning for the future she once thought was out of reach.

The Turning Point

Matea's family was able to access vital support from the Department for Work and Pensions, ensuring her mum received the care she needed. This was a transformative moment - one that gave Matea the freedom to focus on her own future with newfound confidence. With a weight lifted from her shoulders, she seized the opportunity to secure a job at a pharmacy, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a field she had always been passionate about.

What’s Next?

Matea’s journey didn’t stop there. With her growing confidence and skills, she has continued to explore new opportunities within her workplace and has set her sights on building a meaningful career. The transformation from feeling stuck to stepping into a future she’s excited about has been nothing short of inspiring.

Matea’s story is proof that change is possible, no matter your circumstances. If you’re feeling lost, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next step, Street League is here to help. Join a programme, take that first step, and discover what’s possible for you.
