Goal participant, Briony, was a year 11 student looking to overcome her barriers; one of these was her low confidence and self-esteem. In particular, Briony felt uncomfortable answering questions and taking part in group activities that were given to her, such as role play exercises.
When she started on the Goal programme Briony was very quiet, but she was widely liked and got on well with the people around her. She wanted to become more confident and improve her communication skills to feel more comfortable speaking to people she hadn't met before.
During the first term of the programme delivery, Briony attended a derby match at Anfield Stadium where Liverpool FC played Everton FC. During half time, Briony and three other Goal girls went onto the pitch to kick the ball to the centre circle as a competition against other Goal participants.
With the stadium holding over 54,000 spectators, Briony had to overcome her nerves to take part. Being able to do this boosted her self-confidence and after she was a lot more active in the Goal sessions. The following week, she was extremely positive and enjoyed the experience. She said it will help her to relax when she faces new challenges.
In addition to the Goal sessions, Briony also remains physically active by taking part in football and P.E sessions. Briony still engages with the programme through St Francis Assisi School every Wednesday. Briony hopes to successfully complete her GSCE’s while continuing to gain life skills and build her confidence through the Goal programme.
